Chicago Cyclocross Cup Racing Series – Results: Race # 4

ILLINOIS CYCLOCROSS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP        

Montrose Park - Chicago, Illinois

Riders were greeted with a chilly morning low of 9F and an early afternoon high of 23F (-13C and 5C).  Despite the ÔfrigidÕ temperatures brave cross racers took on a challenging course that saw riders in mountain to cross bikes with select technical tires in order to maneuver through the snow.  The course favored the technically strong rider.  The hardest section seemed to be the up hill pavement section which saw crossers battle a strong headwind then pin turn into a tight snow path.

 

Within the course there was a spaghetti like pin frozen tundra turn that forced riders to dismount, run up a short hill, snake via a tunnel and face another short hill followed by a fast section that brought riders back to the start/finish area.

 

Corie Berrigan (Team Kenda Tire) won the womenÕs 1/2/3 race and David Sachs (Vision Quest) won the Men Pro 1 & 2.   Berrigan is no stranger to state championships as in 1998 she was the womenÕs champion in the Wisconsin Cyclocross State Championship.  Both riders took the gold medal for the State of Illinois.

 

Ironically, the top three overall women riders in the womenÕs 1/2/3 race have mountain bike backgrounds.
